Environmental Issues Committee
Major Action Summary
November 4, 2009
- The committee will publish
information in PDA’s publications and on the website about
existing Department of Environmental Protection regulations for
operating x-ray machines in the dental office. The committee will inform
members about how dentists and their staff should maintain the education
and training necessary to comply with existing regulations.
- The committee formed a
subcommittee to develop and publish resources for members about
“going green” in the dental office. The subcommittee
will research the products and technology that is available for dentists
to make their offices more environmentally friendly. The
subcommittee consists of Dr. Michael Kaner (2), Dr. Marian Wolford (9)
and Dr. Cynthia Schuler (10).
- The committee will continue to
monitor any initiatives at the state and local level to restrict
dentists’ ability to discuss dental amalgam with patients or
recommend dental amalgam as a viable restorative option for patients.
The committee and staff will compile data on the number of Philadelphia
dentists who are being asked to remove dental amalgam from
patients’ mouth due to a new mandate from Philadelphia City
Council that requires dentists to give each patient a brochure about
mercury in dental amalgam.
