Can a dental hygienist administer and/or monitor nitrous oxide under the direct supervision of a dentist?
No. Only a dentist may administer and/or monitor any kind of nitrous oxide or conscious sedation. Title 49 Pa. Code only allows for hygienists to have a special permit to administer local anesthesia, under dentists’ direct supervision.
