2017 Annual Award Winners

PDA Distinguished Service Award

Andrew J. Kwasny, DMD, MSD
The PDA Distinguished Service Award will be presented to Andrew J. Kwasny, DMD, MSD, for his dedication to the profession and years of selfless service to his colleagues on the local, state and national level. A few of his many service roles include ADA trustee, PDA president and president of the Erie County Dental Association and the Ninth District Dental Society. Dr. Kwasny is passionate about the future of dentistry and invests many hours mentoring new dentists and students to build a stronger dental community. The PDA Annual Awards Committee is thrilled to give the 2017 PDA Distinguished Service Award to Dr. Andrew J. Kwasny in recognition of his lifelong passion for organized dentistry.


PDA Public Service Award

Kenneth A. Fetter, DMD
The PDA Annual Awards Committee selected Kenneth A. Fetter, DMD, to receive the 2017 PDA Public Service Award for his work to establish the Grace Dental Clinic, a low-cost dental clinic in Chester, PA. Since its inception in 2012, the Grace Dental Clinic consistently has had more than 100 people on the waiting list to receive treatment from the volunteer staff. There is a great need for dental care in Chester and Dr. Fetter continues to seek volunteers so he can expand the hours of the clinic. PDA is proud to recognize the efforts of Dr. Fetter on behalf of the uninsured and underinsured in Chester County.


PDA Recognition Award

Paul A. Moore, DMD, PhD, MPH
Paul A. Moore, DMD, PhD, MPH, will receive the 2017 PDA Recognition Award for his role in the development of drug therapies for the safe administration of local anesthesia, control of postoperative dental pain and the elimination of dental fear and anxiety. The PDA Annual Awards Committee agreed with Dean Braun’s assessment that, “Dr. Moore’s research contributions in advancing safety and efficacy of drug therapy in dentistry should be recognized with this prestigious award.” PDA is delighted to honor Dr. Moore with the 2017 PDA Recognition Award.


The award presentations will be held on April 7, 2017, and the winners will be featured in a future issue of the Pennsylvania Dental Journal.

PDA Public Service Award 
The PDA Annual Awards Committee selected David R. Russell, DMD, as the recipient of the 2015 PDA Public Service Award for establishing a permanent dental clinic to provide comprehensive care for the guests of the Bethesda Mission in Harrisburg. The philosophy of restoration of oral health, function and appearance is a critical component of restoration of the entire self – a core goal of the mission. PDA is proud to recognize Dr. Russell’s efforts on behalf of the underserved population in Central PA.

PDA Recognition Award 
Steven Roland Jefferies, DDS, MS, who holds more than 28 patents will receive the PDA Recognition Award for his research and contributions to the art and science of dentistry. During his 20 year career at DENTSPLY International Dr. Jefferies advanced dentistry through product development. In his second career, spanning more than 40 years, he has contributed to the profession by educating future dental leaders. The PDA Annual Awards Committee is pleased to honor Dr. Jefferies for his contributions to dentistry as a researcher and an educator.
