2018 Annual Award Winners

PDA Distinguished Service Award

Dr. William Spruill
The PDA Distinguished Service Award will be presented to William T. Spruill, DDS, for his leadership and service in the community and the dental profession at the local, state and national level. Dr. Spruill served on dental mission trips abroad before working with a team to establish the MOM-n-PA annual two-day free dental care event. In five years, MOM-n-PA has provided more than $4 million dollars of dental care to underserved Pennsylvanians. His other leadership positions include service in the House of Delegates on the state and national level; president of the Harrisburg Area Dental Society, the Fifth District Dental Society and the Pennsylvania Dental Association as well as the Pennsylvania Academy of General Dentistry.

Passionate about education, Dr. Spruill achieved Mastership and Lifelong Learning and Service Recognition from the Academy of General Dentistry; served as an instructor in the Dental Hygiene Program at the Harrisburg Area Community College and continues to lecture to dental organizations on a variety of relevant topics. Dr. Spruill is well-respected by all who know him and the PDA Annual Awards Committee is pleased to honor Dr. Spruill with the 2018 PDA Distinguished Service Award.


PDA Recognition Award

Dr. Thomas Sollecito
Thomas P. Sollecito, DMD, FDS RCSEd, will receive the 2018 PDA Recognition Award for his research in areas including TMD, oral mucosal diseases, head and neck tumors/cancer and HIV dental treatment. An educator for 25-years, Dr. Sollecito has authored five books and authored or co-authored more than 120 articles, abstracts and reports. The PDA Annual Awards Committee agreed with the board of the Second District Valley Forge Dental Association that “as a Pennsylvania educator, Dr. Sollecito’s contributions to the dental profession have had a huge impact on the next generation of dental leaders.” PDA is delighted to name Dr. Sollecito as the 2018 PDA Recognition Award winner.


PDA Public Service Award 

Community Volunteers In Medicine
The PDA Annual Awards Committee selected the Community Volunteers In Medicine (CVIM) of Chester to receive the 2018 PDA Public Service Award. CVIM maintains seven dental operatories, 10 medical exam rooms and a conference center for patient education to support its mission to provide “compassionate primary medical and dental care and health education to people who live or work in the Chester County region who lack access to insurance, in order to support their goals to lead productive, healthy and hopeful lives.” PDA commends CVIM for its efforts to increase access to quality care at the clinic in West Chester and through the Mobile Dental Outreach program.


The award presentations will be held on April 13, 2018, and the winners will be featured in a future issue of the Pennsylvania Dental Journal.

PDA Public Service Award 
The PDA Annual Awards Committee selected David R. Russell, DMD, as the recipient of the 2015 PDA Public Service Award for establishing a permanent dental clinic to provide comprehensive care for the guests of the Bethesda Mission in Harrisburg. The philosophy of restoration of oral health, function and appearance is a critical component of restoration of the entire self – a core goal of the mission. PDA is proud to recognize Dr. Russell’s efforts on behalf of the underserved population in Central PA.

PDA Recognition Award 
Steven Roland Jefferies, DDS, MS, who holds more than 28 patents will receive the PDA Recognition Award for his research and contributions to the art and science of dentistry. During his 20 year career at DENTSPLY International Dr. Jefferies advanced dentistry through product development. In his second career, spanning more than 40 years, he has contributed to the profession by educating future dental leaders. The PDA Annual Awards Committee is pleased to honor Dr. Jefferies for his contributions to dentistry as a researcher and an educator.
