More Than Smiles

Children and teenagers in the Lehigh Valley have more to smile about as FreySmiles Orthodontics in Schnecksville announced a scholarship program to provide braces to those in need. Dr. Gregg Frey launched More Than Smiles with his son, Scott, who is completing his orthodontic residency. The program will offer orthodontic care to children and teenagers who would otherwise be unable to afford it. Dr. Frey seeks out youth who are active in their schools and communities and in obvious need of orthodontics. He also relies on school officials, dentists and church leaders to recommend students for the scholarship.

Brigitte Marrero-Guempel was recently awarded the scholarship after being encouraged to apply for it by her dentist, PDA member Dr. James Shearer. Brigitte, a 16-year-old sophomore at Parkland High School, is active in Girl Scouts and does volunteer work at her church. She was the first to win the scholarship and chosen from more than a dozen applicants.

“She deserves to have a beautiful smile,” Dr. Frey said in an interview with the Allentown Morning Call. “She was already giving to the community, at school and at her church. We’re just paying it forward.”

Dr. Frey plans to award six scholarships per year. Other dentists and doctors have offered to pitch in with follow-up care and other services to support the program.

“We see a long future for More Than Smiles and hope someday we will say it has served hundreds of children,” Dr. Frey said.
