DESCRIPTION:Local Anesthetics: Old Drugs\, New Drugs and Staying Out of Trouble PLUS Act 31: Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting \n6 CE credits appropriate for dentists\, hygienists\, assistants and EFDAs. Act 31 is a requirement for all PA dental license holders (dentists\, hygienists and EFDAs).\nEducation Method: powerpoint\, lecture and discussion \nChild Abuse Recognition and Reporting (Act 31) will be presented to fulfill the mandatory CE requirement for dentists\, hygienists and EFDAs but the lecture is appropriate for all dental team members.\nLocal anesthetics and their associated vasoconstrictors have had a long history of safety and efficacy in dental practice. However\, pediatric dental patients are especially vulnerable to overdose reactions with this group of drugs. The speaker will illustrate how to perform these dosage calculations including “The Rule of 25.” A potentially serious drug interaction between epinephrine containing local anesthetic solutions and non-selective beta-adrenergic blocking agents also will be highlighted. Research evaluating the efficacy and safety of phentolamine mesylate will be discussed along with the limitations of the intranasal tetracaine plus oxymetazoline mist.\nPresented by Elliot V. Hersh\, DMD\, MS\, PhD\, Professor of Pharmacology/Oral Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. He has published more than 175 scientific articles\, abstracts and book chapters in the areas of dental pharmacology\, drug interactions\, analgesics and local anesthetics. Braun\, who has a private practice specializing in prosthodontics in Saginaw\, Michigan. For the past 25 years\, Dr. Braun has lectured at dental meetings all around the country and conducted numerous hands-on workshops. He has published a variety of articles on esthetic restorative dentistry and consults for several dental manufacturers on the development of new products. Dr. Braun has no additional relevant financial relationships to disclose. \nThis combination lecture and hands-on workshop will showcase the best products for successful direct composite restorations. Participants will appreciate the importance of Universal Adhesives and Nano-particle Composite systems. The morning lecture portion will be followed by a hands-on composite workshop with all products and typodonts being furnished. No finishing and polishing will be undertaken as handpieces are not available.\nRequirements: attendees need to bring their charged LED magnification eyewear.
