DESCRIPTION:Philadelphia County Dental Society & Pennsylvania Dental Association present: \n8:30 a.m. – 3:30 p.m. — Periodontics: Translating Perio Diagnoses into Clinical Practice and Too Little\, Too Much: Getting the Soft Tissue Just Right\nPresented by: Dr. Adam Saltz\, who maintains a practice in South Portland\, Maine and is the managing editor for Decisions in Dentistry. Dr. Saltz graduated from the UT Health Science Center at San Antonio\, where he obtained his Master of Science degree and Certificate in Periodontics. He completed his dental training and received a Master of Public Health degree from Nova Southeastern University. ADA recognized him in 2023 with a 10 Under 10 Award for his contributions in education\, public health and organized dentistry. Dr. Saltz has no relevant financial relationships to disclose. \nPart 1 Translating Perio Diagnoses into Clinical Practice – Patients with advanced periodontal destruction pose a unique challenge to the restorative dentist. Arriving at the proper diagnosis and prognosis for patients with poor oral and overall health will improve the way we rehabilitate an otherwise hopeless dentition.\nPart 2 Getting the Soft Tissue Just Right – This session will aid the dental team as they diagnose\, treat and maintain mucogingival defects and excessive gingival display. DESCRIPTION:Local Anesthetics: Old Drugs\, New Drugs and Staying Out of Trouble PLUS Act 31: Child Abuse Recognition and Reporting \n6 CE credits appropriate for dentists\, hygienists\, assistants and EFDAs. Act 31 is a requirement for all PA dental license holders (dentists\, hygienists and EFDAs).\nEducation Method: powerpoint\, lecture and discussion \nChild Abuse Recognition and Reporting (Act 31) will be presented to fulfill the mandatory CE requirement for dentists\, hygienists and EFDAs but the lecture is appropriate for all dental team members.\nLocal anesthetics and their associated vasoconstrictors have had a long history of safety and efficacy in dental practice. However\, pediatric dental patients are especially vulnerable to overdose reactions with this group of drugs. The speaker will illustrate how to perform these dosage calculations including “The Rule of 25.” A potentially serious drug interaction between epinephrine containing local anesthetic solutions and non-selective beta-adrenergic blocking agents also will be highlighted. Research evaluating the efficacy and safety of phentolamine mesylate will be discussed along with the limitations of the intranasal tetracaine plus oxymetazoline mist.\nPresented by Elliot V. Hersh\, DMD\, MS\, PhD\, Professor of Pharmacology/Oral Surgery at the University of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine. He has published more than 175 scientific articles\, abstracts and book chapters in the areas of dental pharmacology\, drug interactions\, analgesics and local anesthetics.
