Infection Control In The Era Emerging/Re-emerging Disease(s): What Dental Practitioners Need to Know

Presented by Louis G. DePaola, DDS, MS, FAAOM, FACD, FICD

Three (3) CE credits recommended for dentists, hygienists, EFDAs and dental assistants.

Education Methods: lecture, slides, case studies and discussion

Emerging and re-emerging diseases are a fact of life in the modern world. Preventing the spread of these new and/or changing infections in the dental office presents a continuous challenge for dental practitioners. New infection control guidelines have been and will continue to be instituted to ensure that the dental office is as safe as possible. Dental practitioners must be aware of evolving infection control guidelines to protect themselves and the patients they treat. In the last fifty years numerous infectious diseases have challenged the delivery of oral healthcare.

In the 1980s-1990s the emergence of HIV/AIDS mandated significant changes in infection control practices to ensure safe treatment of patients in the dental office. In 2020, the respiratory infection COVID-19 caused by the novel coronavirus SARS-CoV-2 rapidly circumnavigated the globe clearly illustrating the potential for a respiratory pathogen to both spread very rapidly in the modern world and cause considerable morbidity and mortality. Just as alarming is the recent increase in vaccine-preventable diseases as well as STDs and TB.

This program will provide dental providers with the latest information on the management of recent emerging diseases as well as COVID-19 in the dental office. Paramount to controlling this pandemic are the principles of respiratory hygiene and cough etiquette and enhancements in respiratory protection that may need to be implemented. Emphasis will be placed on compliance issues and how a practical, cost effective “safe workplace” can be achieved. This course fulfills CDE requirements for infection control and requirements for annual OSHA training.

Upon completion of this lecture, participants should be able to:

  • Understand the routes of transmission of infectious diseases and how to break the chain of infection.
  • Know the updated recommendations for Standard Precautions, inclusive of Contact, Droplet & Airborne Precautions.
  • Learn the principles of respiratory hygiene & cough etiquette to reduce the impact of respiratory diseases.
  • Understand the latest information on the prevention, transmission, and management of COVID-19 and emerging/remerging diseases.
  • Learn how to reduce exposure/contamination to the plethora of pathogens in the dental office.
  • Understand the principles of cleaning, disinfection and sterilization in the dental office.
  • How to practice “Bullet Proof Infection Control.”

Promoting Wellness with Minimally Invasive Dental Techniques

Presented by Mark S. Wolff, DDS, PhD

Three (3) CE credits recommended for dentists and hygienists

Education Methods: lecture, slides, and discussion

This lecture will cover the diagnostic criteria essential for the modern management of dental caries. It will begin with a brief overview of the pathophysiology of carious lesions to establish a foundation for understanding the new medical models of caries management. The focus will be on the methods of preserving tooth structure through treatments that can arrest, prevent, and even reverse the damage caused by dental caries. The goal of lecture is to establish a scientific and clinical basis for preserving tooth structure while conservatively managing tooth decay.

Upon completion of this lecture, participants can expect to:

  • Learn the mechanism of tooth decay to apply therapeutic interventions that can arrest, prevent, and reverse caries damage.
  • Use expanded diagnostic skills to classify the damage caused by the decay process.
  • Understand the evidence supporting various interventions to arrest, prevent, and reverse caries damage, and how to apply these interventions.

Implant Complications from a Restorative Perspective

Presented by Carl F. Driscoll, DMD

Three (3) CE credits recommended for dentists, dental assistants and EFDAs

Education Methods: lecture, slides, case studies and discussion

The implant industry continues to grow at an accelerating rate. Once reserved only for the patients with unlimited financial capabilities, patients of even moderate means are now receiving implant treatment. This presentation will focus on the complications that may be seen during the course of this treatment. These complications may actually be normal maintenance procedures that need to be identified prior to the start of any proposed treatment and conveyed to the patient. A clear picture of preventable and non-preventable complications will be discussed. The attendee will be exposed to many different complications involving implant treatment through numerous clinical examples. The handling of these complications will be discussed so that the attendee can better treat his/her patients when unfortunate events dictate immediate reconciliation.

Upon completion of this lecture, participants can expect to:

  • Understand the complications that you may face with implants in your practice and methods to differentiate implant complications that are normal maintenance issues from those that are not predictable.
  • Learn clinical techniques to make implant treatment less stressful to you and the patient
  • Learn methods to deal with implant complications.
