About the Speaker


Kiersten Aucoin, EFDA
   Kiersten began her career in the dental sector as an assistant a little more than a decade ago. She realized quickly that the dental field was her passion and attained a BS in Health and Exercise Science from the University of Oklahoma and her Expanded Function Dental Assistant (EFDA) certificate from the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry where she became highly skilled in all aspects of digital dentistry. In 2020, Kiersten began her outside sales career as a territory representative and transitioned into her current role as a Practice Solutions Consultant with Benco Dental in 2021. Treatment Considerations for the Management of the Geriatric and Special Needs Patient

This presentation will address many of the challenges dentists confront in providing dental care for both the geriatric and special needs patient as well as the obstacles that link these two disparate yet in many ways, similar patient cohorts. Identifying the many underlying medical conditions and comorbidities afflicting these complex patients and their impact on anesthetic management will be reviewed. In addition, balancing the skill and expertise of the dental provider against the extent of treatment necessary and the capacity of the setting to provide a proper and safe environment will be explored. The presentation also will include case presentations that underscore the unique issues that can confront and confound dentists and demand timely and effective management. 

Upon completion of the course, the participant will:

  • Have an appreciation for the many complex medical comorbidities that are characteristic of the geriatric and special needs patient.
  • Understand the considerations factored into formulating an appropriate management plan including the potential need for anesthetic intervention and determination of the proper treatment venue.
  • Have an algorithm for confronting the unanticipated challenges that can spontaneously arise from the treatment of these very challenging patient cohorts.

About the Speaker

Robert M. Peskin, DDS, DADBA, FAGD, FACD, FICD
   Dr. Peskin is a graduate of Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine and completed General Practice and Dental Anesthesiology Residencies at Long Island Jewish Medical Center. Since 1983, he has maintained a private dental anesthesiology practice devoted primarily to the management of anxious, apprehensive, and special needs patients in Garden City. In addition, he provides in-office anesthesia for other dentists throughout New York State. Dr. Peskin is Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery’s Division of Hospital Dentistry at Stony Brook. He is a Diplomate of the American Dental Board of Anesthesiology and a Fellow of the Academy of General Dentistry and the American and International Colleges of Dentists. Dr. Peskin lectures nationally on a broad variety of anesthesia-related topics as well as on risk management. Dr. Peskin has no relevant financial relationships to disclose.

Radiation Safety and Regulations with Radiographic Pathology

This lecture addresses essential components of safe and efficient practice of radiography in a dental office to comply with the PA Department of Environmental Protection’s (DEP) CE requirements for individuals who operate radiographic equipment. This lecture also will present the features of radiographic pathology as they present on 3-dimensional and 2-dimensional radiography.

Upon completion of the course, attendees will be refreshed with an understanding of:

  • The PA DEP’s regulations.
  • Radiation safety, biological effects of radiation, quality assurance and quality control.
  • Radiographic characteristics of bone pathology, cysts, benign and malignant tumors on 3- and 2-dimensional radiographs.

Anitha Potluri, DMD

  

Dr. Potluri is an associate professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology and chair of Department of Diagnostic Sciences and assistant dean of residency education at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. She completed her undergraduate education, and bachelors in dental surgery in India, and DMD at the University of Pittsburgh School of Dental Medicine. She went on to earn MDS degree and finished her Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology residency training at the University of Connecticut. Dr. Potluri is a board-certified oral radiologist and her research interests include Cone Beam CT and fibro-osseous lesions. Dr. Potluri has no relevant financial relationships to disclose.

Local Anesthesia: Debunking The Myths—A Comprehensive Review

This presentation provides an update and review of the essentials of local anesthesia pharmacology and administration. It also will include a discussion regarding some of the untoward reactions and interactions that can result from local anesthesia administration. In addition, strategies for administering local anesthesia will be developed including an in-depth review of the more recently introduced local anesthetic agents, delivery systems and reversal agents. The presentation will also include a detailed discussion about the use of buffering agents, that when added to local anesthetics, accelerate its onset of action.


Upon completion of the course, the participant will:

  • Have a thorough understanding of the essentials of local anesthesia pharmacology.

  •  Make an optimal local anesthetic agent selection and dosing based upon the patient and the treatment being provided.

  •  Understand some of the newer concepts regarding local anesthesia administration that can help facilitate optimal patient outcome.
